Our commitment to human rights work recognizes the need to respect the rights and freedoms held by each of our stakeholders. As a result, each of our management systems incorporate tools that enable us to put into practice and manage issues that relate to respect for these rights, and also check that our management efforts are indeed coherent.

We base ourselves on the strictest international standards and on exercises that we have carried out with other companies, the Government and civil society organizations to adapt these standards to our country's circumstances. The aim is to check that environmental rights, workers' rights, consumer rights and, in general, all categories of rights that are touched by our management, are indeed being addressed and respected.

Similarly, we regard peace as actions aimed at building a society where there is complete respect for human rights and there are opportunities for sustainable human development.

  • We respect and promote human rights 

    Human Rights Policy

    We have a Human Rights Policy that intends to encourage and promote respect thereof while performing business activities and to promote among stakeholders respect for human rights and International Humanitarian Law, which are recognized by the States and societies to be fundamental for essential dignity and harmonic coexistence. The guidelines are incorporated in our day to day activity and we socialize it with our stakeholders.

    Risk and Impact Studies

    In the corporate risk matrix, the human rights risk is identified. Therefore, 100% of the areas of influence of our power generation plants have been subjected to risk and sociopolitical and human rights impact assessments, which are updated every four years and have qualitative and quantitative metrics.

    We conduct continuous monitoring of human rights situations through the Early Alert System (SAT in Spanish), interinstitutional meetings, the Community Information and Participation Program (PIPC), consultation with indigenous communities, meetings with suppliers and the Ethics Channel.


    We perform training activities with employees, suppliers, communities in the area of influence and the society in general. These include virtual courses on human rights, communication pieces, face to face talks and workshops, support to third party training programs, etc.

    Institutional strengthening

    We undertake cooperation agreements and joint projects that promote citizen education on human rights and International Humanitarian Law among politicians.

    Our main approach: prevention

    We develop mechanisms that help us implement our Human Rights Policy and strengthen commitment, particularly among employees, contractors and suppliers, so that during Company activities performed, human rights are strictly respected. Thus, we have contractual clauses, guidelines and, furthermore, we develop training and awareness processes. Similarly, we integrate conclusions from assessments in the processes and monitor the efficiency of our management.

    We are also an active part of regional initiatives to promote respect for human rights:

    • Transparency Group and Human Rights Observatory: this forum was set up by the Governor of Tolima and the community upon the construction of the Amoyá power plant, to ensure respect for the human rights of the people living in this region of southern Tolima, by addressing allegations of human rights violations and establishing commitments from the competent entities.
    • Human Rights Group for Eastern Antioquia: this forum aims to monitor the human rights situation in the region, and we participate as observers to address complaints relating to the actions of our employees and contractors.

    Thanks to support from the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Fundación Ideas para la Paz (Ideas for Peace Foundation) and CDA Collaborative Learning Projects, conducted a case study on the construction of our Amoyá River-La Esperanza Hydroelectric Power Plant, a collaborative project by which companies learned together in their pursuit of corporate projects in locations where non-government armed groups are present. The joint analysis of cases is part of a broader project to acquire knowledge on corporate responsibility and identify effective practices for reducing violence and the risks thereof, as well as increasing security for people living in areas where non-government armed groups are present.

  • Tracking and Evaluation 

    We continuously monitor human rights situations through the Early Alert System (SAT), the Human rights and Transparency Groups, meetings of the Community Information and Participation Program (PIPC) and mechanisms to address Petitions, Claims, Grievances and Requests (PRQS), which register cases of such nature.


Human rights initiatives

Working with others motivates us to be better, join efforts and abilities, and share learnings. Therefore, we adhere to various sustainability group initiatives that are related to various aspects of our management related to peace and human rights:

  • Colombia's Guide on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law 

    Intended to promote respect for human rights in the companies and their stakeholders in complex scenarios.

    Our commitment

    Since 2009, we have been committed to this initiative and have participated actively in the work groups, making proposals and incorporating these practices to perform our work. Consequently, we conduct verification and adjustments i some of our management systems, in particular, issues related to land acquisition.

  • Security and Human Rights Voluntary Principles 

    It is the State's obligation to protect human rights and the companies must respect them. Both have the commitment of providing adequate, effective resources when these are violated.

    Our commitment

    We aligned with this initiative in 2011 and perform our security management based on risk and impact studies, being aware of actions by the police force and overseeing private services, whether integrated or not with the police, to be conducted always respecting people's rights and freedom.

  • Sustainable Development Goals Peace, justice and strong institutions 

    Peace, justice and sound institutions are essential for the promotion of peaceful, inclusive societies, access to justice and building responsible, efficient institutions.

    Our commitment

    We committed to this Sustainable Development Goad in 2016 to reinforce our practices and programs intended for peace building, institutional strengthening, and promotion of ethics and transparency in our actions.

  • All power plants in service have updated human rights risk and impact studies, and all were discussed with the communities and institutions of the areas of influence.
  • The totality of our contracts and agreements include a clause requiring respect for human rights.
  • The 92% of private security and surveillance staff received training on human rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The entire staff and all operators at the Integrated Security Centers have taken the basic online course on IHL provided by the Red Cross International Committee and the Colombian Red Cross.
  • The 75% of employees took the updated human rights online course.
  • A total of 377 employees and 341 contractors participated in activities to promote the Policy for the Respect and Promotion of Human Rights.
