Hydroelectricity: a Clean, Renewable, Reliable, and Efficient Source of Energy

Hydroelectricity: a Clean, Renewable, Reliable, and Efficient Source of Energy

Hydroelectricity is the best alternative for generating electricity in Colombia because of its enormous potential. It is renewable, clean energy, and generation costs are low.

Colombia is privileged for its ample water supply, which is six times the global average and three times Latin America’s. This water supply, plus favorable topographic conditions, translates to high hydroelectric potential. Hydroelectricity is the most cost-effective way to produce energy. Therefore, it should continue to be the backbone of the Colombian electricity sector in order to maintain a clean, renewable, efficient, and reliable grid.

Hydroelectricity has great attributes and a series of positive social and environmental side effects. It is a clean source, because it does not consume water or alter its quality. It does not compete for the resource and facilitates other applications. It is a low carbon source, which helps mitigate the effects of climate change because of its low Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and because it is used in place of energy sources originating from fossil fuels. Hydroelectric facilities have a long useful life, of more than 100 years in specific case, and facility technology can be adapted.

Reservoirs are the most cost-effective and sustainable method for storing water and energy because they capitalize on hydroelectricity’s main attributes, supporting the use of other power generation sources and improving the system’s flexibility and reliability. They promote energy security and stabile energy prices, reducing the effects of climate variability. They also improve the resilience of various applications of water such as irrigation, power generation, and potable water.

The Colombian electricity sector has overcome critical drought seasons (the El Niño phenomenon), still producing more than 50% of the country's electric power with hydroelectricity, which reflects the resilience of reservoirs.

Best Practices: Basics of Sustainable Development and Territorial Peace

Hydroelectricity developed responsibly and sustainably contributes to creating opportunities and prosperity in the regions.

Aimed at avoiding unfavorable environmental and social contingencies, the current approach to hydroelectric power plant projects incorporates sustainability criteria in the various design, construction, and operation stages, aligned with the sector’s international best practices.

Hydroelectricity allows and empowers developing other activities and uses of water such as agriculture, with irrigation systems, human consumption, transport, tourism and recreation, artisanal fishing for commercial purposes and flood control. Likewise, hydroelectric power plant construction and operation provide resources for protecting ecosystems, conserving habitats, and improving the living conditions of communities within the areas of influence.

Hydroelectric power plant projects are an opportunity to recover and develop regions affected by the armed conflict and illegal activities, facilitating crop substitution and the ecological restoration of areas affected by illegal mining.

Managing Water Sustainably is this Century's Greatest Challenge. Managing it must be approached collectively, beginning in the territories, with concrete plans and policies that promote its use as a public resource that must be protected and properly managed.

Colombia needs to steer its economic development in a more environmentally sustainable and socially just direction. Hydroelectricity offers an opportunity to accomplish that goal since it still has so much potential and a long road to cover in formulating solid policies.
