Manso Hydroelectric Project is located in the Department of Caldas, in the Municipalities of Samaná and Norcasia, on the eastern foothills of the Central Mountain Range.
Construction of the Manso Hydroelectric Project will be carried out in two phases; the first phase consists in transferring part of the River Manso waters from a site located in the Puente San Diego sector, by a pressure tunnel 4.45 km long and 3.5 meters in diameter to the Amaní dam of Miel I Power Plan. The second phase, known as Phase 2, consists in installing a surface power plant with two hydraulic turbines at the end of the Manso diversion tunnel prior to discharging it, thus making use of the tunnel flows to generate additional power.
The Manso Diversion Project (Phase 1) will increase Miel I Power Plant generation in 179 GWh/year. The Manso Hydroelectric Project (Phase 2) will have its own generation of 128 GWh/year.
This Project consists of a concrete dam with water intake works by means of a bottom inlet grate 20.8 meters long and 5 meters high. Collected waters will be driven through a concrete-coated pressure tunnel 4.45 km. long, with a horseshoe-type section 2.8 meters wide and 2.95 meters high to a valve set consisting of a closing valve (butterfly type) 1.7 meters diameter and a Howell Bunger dissipation valve 1 meter in diameter, located at the discharge plaza that will be built on the left bank of Montebello Creek, a tributary of the Moro River.
The powerhouse will consist of the main building, transformer and substation yard, and a zone containing a closing gate of the turbine suction conduits. The powerhouse will host two generating units. The transformer yard will host the three-phase transformers and a conventional substation.
Discharges from the powerhouse units will run through conduits that will join in a single rectangular channel discharging to the Amani reservoir of the Miel I power plant.
The estimated program timetable for execution of the works is forty-three (43) months, starting from its initiation order.
The Environmental License of the Project is currently being processed before the Ministry of the Environment, Housing, and Territorial Development. Up to date, all necessary studies for its approval have been presented, including some additional studies required by the Ministry.
