Calderas Hydroelectric Power Plant

The Calderas Hydroelectric Power Plant is located in the Department of Antioquia, Colombia. The Station uses of the Calderas and Tafetanes Rivers, with an average flow of 6,7 m3/s. Turbinated waters discharge into the San Carlos River that feeds the Punchiná reservoir, increasing San Carlos Hydroelectric Power Plant production by 269 GWh-year.

The powerhouse is located in the Municipality of San Carlos and the Tafetanes and Calderas Rivers reservoirs are located in the jurisdiction of the Granada Municipality.

On June 30, 2006, the plant restarted its commercial operation, which allows ISAGEN to strengthen its hydroelectric power generation by 356 GWh per year.

Location

Powerhouse

The superficial type powerhouse, includes two vertical axis Pelton type turbines, 6 jets at 240 rpm, with rated power 13 MW each for a net head of 152,5, and two three phase synchronic generators, of vertical axis, 0.95 power factor , 13,8 kV and 13,2 MVA each. The connection to the 115 kV substation is made through a main three phase step up transformer, 20/26,8 MVA and voltage ratio 13,8/115 kV.

The 115 kV Calderas substation is integrated with the National Interconnected System by means of the Guatapé - Claro River transmission line.

The dam

Gravity type concrete dam, 25 meters high, 152 meters long and 25.000 m3 volume. The dam has a central spillway 60 meters wide and 24 meters long, as well as a controlled bottom discharge by a radial floodgate. The storage capacity of reservoir is 330.000 m3.

Tafetanes River diversion

Tafetanes River diversion was made through the following works:

  • A small concrete gravity dam with an approximate volume of 4.600 m3, including an uncontrolled central spillway 25 meters long.
  • A water intake structure, with frontal adduction with a pressure tunnel by means of a vertical well 2 meters in diameter and 53 meters deep.
  • A pressure tunnel 1.230 meters long and a horseshoe section of 4,6 m2 cross section, coated with concrete only where the geological conditions so require.
  • A 240 meter long and 0,6 meter in diameter pressure pipe freely supported on seats in the final section of the tunnel.
  • A structure for energy dissipation controlled by a Howell Bunger type valve for discharging diverted water to Los Medios Creek.
