|San Carlos Hydroelectric Power Plant|
With over 25 years of commercial operations, it is the power plant with the largest installed capacity in the country, with 1,240 MW (megawatts) distributed in eight units, each with 155 MW, and it has the infrastructure necessary to install two additional units. The first stage began operations in 1984 and the second in 1987.
This plant is located in the department of Antioquia, in the jurisdiction of the San Carlos municipality, near the El Jordán township.
The electricity generated by the San Carlos Power Plant is delivered to the National Transmission System (NTS) and then to the Grid's consumption centers through a substation at 230 kilovolts (kV).
The power plant is supervised by the National Dispatch Center (NDC), which carries out the functions of automatic generation control (AGC) when required.
The reservoir on the Guatapé River has an area of 3.4 square meters and a storage capacity of 72 million cubic meters. The Punchiná Dam is an earthfill gravity dam that is 70 meters high and 800 meters long.
